A design that unites the passion of the Equidae and human nature in action. If the métiers d’art (applied arts) that he masters with style allow him to create very complicated designs, the challenge here was different. The highly complex design required an extreme technique given the retranscription of the model in ¾ perspective.
The execution of all the minute details of the harness in this scale is a genuine challenge especially since the creation from a photograph allows a direct comparison with the original where any disproportion or error is immediately visible.
As meilleur ouvrier de France (French Master Craftsman) in the Jewellery and Precious Metal category in 2000, Ollivier, specialist in applied arts, wanted to transpose this polo player and his mount as a genuine work of art, in three-dimensions, through a bas relief dial.
The hand-crafted dial based on a photograph, was created directly in a block of wax and then cast in bronze. Ollivier always produces a large dimension sculpted plaque that necessitates a pattern larger than the final object, but allows him to resize the final dial and reorientate it to the best effect. Naturally he loses an important part of his work but achieves the desired effect.
As always, Ollivier uses a binocular loupe to perfectly recreate the details of his oeuvres well beyond a normal visual perceptiveness. The sculpting of the visual demands extreme precision since every gesture marks the malleable wax. Given that the enlargement through the binocular loupe is magnified x 20, Ollivier’s gestures have to be twenty times more precise and necessitates a technique whereby he holds his breath for the duration of every movement so as not to perturb the precision.
